Join the club! Most small businesses go through similar concerns and thoughts. The concerns are valid but they don’t make it any easier. You should first and foremost come to the conclusion that you want to sell…not maybe, not gee I think so…not I will sell for the right price.
Get serious and remember that your business will sell to a qualified buyer who is buying it for reasons that fit their perspective. Don’t make the mistake of not thinking about what the buyer wants. You love your “baby” and you want the best return you can get. But you must be realistic about what the market has to say about your price and terms.
It simply doesn’t matter what you think it is worth! It is worth exactly what an independent buyer will pay for it…no more, no less. If you are not willing to accept this very important fact, you are not ready to sell your business. You might as well accept the fact that your business and the time you spend there will be your retirement!
